FAST FACTS ON THE RENEWABLE HEAT INCENTIVE

For the average household using 17,000kWh of heat a year, the Renewable Heat Incentive will provide the following benefits if a heat pump system and a boiler were installed:

15,900kWh of heat generated paying the homeowner £1,625 a year (the kW difference being made up through energy efficiency measures such as insulation).

Fuel costs could be as much as £575 per year.

Therefore the total annual benefit is in excess of £1000 per year.

Cost

Do You want to reduce your carbon footprint and your energy bills, become more self-sufficient in energy, and earn some extra income? The Renewable Heat Incentive is a new Government-backed measure being introduced in 2012 to make it worth your while to produce renewable heat.

The Renewable Heat Incentive is still being designed, so all the details described in this website are provisional and may change.

Details of the final proposals for the Renewable Heating Incentive are still awaited and should be available spring of 2012, but we do know from the papers published in 2010 by the govenment's own Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) that they were proposing the following rates as incentive for the different types of renewable energy:

Technology Rate per Kwh Lifetime (years)
Ground source heat pump 7 23
Air source heat pump 7.5 18
Solar thermal (water heating) 18 20
Solar PV <4kW 21 25
Solar PV >4-10kW 16.8 25

These rates would equate to the following annual payments, based upon the tables set out in Appendix 2 of the Consultation Document.

For a 3 Bedroom, modern, semi detached house £677 p.a. with an Air Source Heat Pump but £725 with a Ground Source pump.

For a modern 4 bedroom detached house £1,186 p.a. with an Air Source Heat pump, but £1,270 with Ground Source.

Solar Thermal would be £400 p.a. regardless of the house size.

We are in an excellent position to advise on the best system for maximum return in both heat and money terms.

Government

What is the Renewable Heat Premium Payment?

This is a UK Government scheme designed to help you afford renewable technologies for your home, such as: Solar thermal panels Heat pumps ( air source, ground source or water source), and Biomass boilers. The amount received as part of the Renewable Heat Premium Payment scheme depends on which technology you are applying for. The voucher values for each of the technologies is listed below:

Amount received by technology
Technology Voucher value
Solar Thermal Hot Water £300
Air Source Heat Pump £850
Ground Source or Water Source Heat Pump £1250
Biomass boiler £950

The Renewable Heat Premium Payment scheme will run from 1st August 2011 to 31st March 2012.

Who can apply for the Renewable Heat Premium Payment?

If you live in England, Scotland or Wales, you are eligible to apply for the Renewable Heat Premium Payment.

No matter how you currently heat your home and how much fuel you already use, anyone can apply for the solar thermal panel funding. However, if you currently rely on oil, liquid gas, solid fuel or electricity then you could also apply for air, ground - or water - source heat pumps and biomass boilers.

So only those who do not currently use gas as their main heating fuel can apply for these technologies.

CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER GIVES THE RHI THE GREEN LIGHT THEN DISAPPOINTS

The Government initially confirmed that the RHI would go ahead next June paid for directly by the Treasury. Exactly what impact these changes will have on the scheme as published within the consultation document remain to be seen and we are unlikely to know before the Government's response to the consultation is published. However, all has now been delayed until Oct 2012 with details still unclear on final payment rates.
